DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE (2020) Guide

DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE (2020) Guide

The electric version of the DS 3 CROSSBACK. The E-TENSE is a crossover SUV that positions itself in the premium section of this category, promoting a quintessential French luxury feel, pulling out all the stops in terms of styling aesthetics. Range capabilities come in a little short for this class of EV’s, registering under the 200-mile mark; however, rapid 100kW on-board charging capabilities go some way in easing those range concerns.

Charging the DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE

The E-TENSE comes with a battery size of 50kWh and has an official WLTP range of 200-miles.

Charging times will, of course, vary based on the power of the charger; a 7kW home charger, for example, will take around 7.5 hours to charge from 0% to 100%, providing an approximate range per hour of 26 miles*. The total cost of home charging from empty to full, based on an electricity tariff of 14p/kWh, will be £7.

The E-TENSE has a CCS connector option enabling you to make use of the rapid charging network that is expanding across the UK. Plugged into a 100kW charging station, the E-TENSE will charge from 0-80% in just 30 minutes.

Note: It is worth highlighting here that the electric DS 3 CROSSBACK has a max DC rate of 100kW, this means if you plugged into a 150kW charger, you would still be charging at 100kW. Its max AC 1-phase rate is 7.4kW and a max AC 3-phase rate of 11kW. If you plugged into a 22kW AC 3-phase charger, the battery will charge at 11kW and so forth.

Charging Times**:

  • 2.1kW (3-pin plug) = 22h for 0-100%
  • 3.7kW = 14h for 0-100%
  • 7.4kW = 7h for 0-100%
  • 11kW = 5h for 0-100%
  • 50kW = 40m for 20-80%

*Based on WLTP range

**Charging times are estimates and will vary depending on factors such as the charger in use and temperature of the battery.

Benefits of owning a DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE

Classified as a BEV, the E-TENSE produces zero emissions which results in several benefits. Road tax, Ultra Low Emission Zones and London Congestion Charge all come in at an attractive £0. In addition to regular and yearly savings, the electric DS 3 qualifies for the OLEV Plug-in car and Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) grants.

What are people saying about the DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE?

The E-TENSE is bold in its design aesthetics. Subtle is not a word many would use to describe it. The extrovert styling results in a unique exterior with pronounced wings and deep curves, while diamond-shaped features dominate the interior.

Range and performance are where many feel the DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE faulters. Launched as part of the PSA Group’s luxury brand, this model isn’t cheap. It’s priced similarly to rivals such as the Kia e-Niro and Hyundai KONA. The catch here is that the DS 3 doesn’t offer the same level of range and it appears to be less joyful to drive. While its competitors boast ranges up toward the 300-mile mark, the E-TENSE sits much lower with an official range of 200-miles.

In place of long-range performance, comfort and style were the optimal goals for this EV. Designers prioritised ergonomics, cushioning and suspension combined with distinctive and quirky aesthetics. The E-TENSE offers a quiet and relaxed drive. If you’re in the market for a chic, compact, sustainable crossover SUV (and are not so fussed by the concept of range for money) then this could be the car for you.
